Talent of all kinds is being sought by Catterick Sunday Market to perform in their new Big Top Entertainment venue.

Bands, comedians, dancers, clowns, acrobats, burlesque girls, drag queens, contortionists, sword swallowers and entertainers of all descriptions will be considered for the 2010 Sunday Schedule at the Big Top venue.

In addition, charities, sports organisations, community, youth and special interest groups are invited to put forward ideas for Sunday events and exhibitions as the Market is keen to offer support to the community.

As the biggest independent market in the North East, Catterick Sunday Market has the freedom to push the boundaries to provide unique entertainment experiences for its audience of 15,000 shoppers.

WEATHER FORCES CHANGES TO BIG TOP VENUE SCHEDULE

Catterick Sunday Market Big Top has been booking an impressive list of live bands for the next four weeks but there have been some schedule changes due to the weather. The new line-up is as follows: January 17th kicks off with popular Darlington Band Carolina Star, with their own unique take on Country Blues and 60's Classics, supported by local legends, Lulu Fidler and Trudie Brunskill.

The 24^th January sees Steve Wade playing an enjoyable acoustic set of covers and his own work.

On 31^st January, the Big Top plays host to the great Get Educated with their inimitable style of rock.

Foot-tappin’ Blues and Rock 'n' Roll are the order of the day on 07 February from the Blind Boys of Richmond; and on Valentine’s Day there will be a special surprise Singles Event for anyone ‘In the Market for Love…!’

BIG TOP VENUE LAUNCHES AT CATTERICK SUNDAY MARKET

A new music and entertainment venue has been launched at Catterick Sunday Market. Bands and entertainers of all descriptions will entertain market visitors at the new Big Top which is now a permanent fixture at the market.

The Big Top is an original circus-style Big Top and has a capacity of 400. It is fully heated and features it’s own unique bar – the Sneaky Pint which is a converted Hoop-La stall selling Yorkshire beer and German lager.

Every Sunday, bands and entertainment will take place in the Big Top from 12pm, providing not only unique entertainment but also a cosy, warm refuge from any bad weather!

The first act of the 2010 programme is on Sunday January 10^th from 12:00 when popular local band the Blind Boys of Richmond who will get your feet moving with some fantastic Blues & Rock ‘n’ Roll (www.blindboys.co.uk). Acts featuring on the next 3 Sundays in January are My Lost Youth (a young band playing Emo Rock – ( www.myspace.com/mylostyouthmusic) on January 17^th, Steve Wade playing an acoustic set on January 24^th and the great Get Educated with their inimitable style of rock on Jan 31st (www.myspace.com/geteducatedband).

The Sneaky Pint Launched

The Sneaky Pint was launched on 13 September 2009 at Catterick Sunday Market.

Hundreds of pints of Wensleydale Brewery's Semer Water golden ale were served at the first and only Hoop-la Bar in the country.

The restored Hoop-la fairground bingo stall had been in the family of Edward Bliss (who also trades at Catterick Market) for over 40 years and has been a popular favourite at fairgrounds across the North East.

It is a beautiful stall with the original features, canopy, lights and seats and can be seen right from the other end of the market. Even those that don't fancy a Sneaky Pint still visit to see the enchanting structure.

But most people do fancy a Sneaky Pint, particularly the Dads and husbands who feel they've shopped enough and want a sit down and a pint!

The Sneaky Pint is just one of the many unique experiences that visitors can enjoy at Catterick Sunday Market - an experience as far away from supermarket shopping as you can get!

CATTERICK MARKET SCOOPS GREEN AWARD AT WESTMINSTER

Staff and traders at Catterick Sunday Market are celebrating today after scooping the 'runner up for the North' award in the 'How Green is Your Market' competition.
The award was set up by the National Market Traders Federation in collaboration with Friends of the Earth in an attempt to encourage markets and traders to become more environmentally friendly.

Some of the green initiatives that Catterick Sunday Market has pioneered include planting a market forest of 8000 trees, setting up an onsite natural reed bed water treatment plant which treats all the waste water and sewage from the site, recycling of 60% of the markets waste, use of wind up technology instead of battery, composting of fruit and vegetable waste and re-use of plastic crates.

Market Manager Greville Worthington, is delighted with the big win. He says "we have been working extremely hard over the last 10 years to limit the environmental impact of the market. This award recognises the commitment of the staff, the traders and the customers and we intend to do even better next year!”

Greville will travel to the Houses of Parliament in London to accept the award on Thursday 20th November.

Miss Durham Bags a Bargain!

Shoppers and Dads alike were delighted when Miss Durham put in an appearance at Catterick Sunday Market this Fathers' Day. The 19 year old half Brazilian beauty wowed the crowds in a strapless black evening dress, complete with her crown and sash. Market staff were on hand with polaroid cameras so that visitors and traders could have their photos taken with the Hartlepool model.

Miss Durham said 'I've never been to Catterick Market before and I've had a brilliant time. Everyone's been lovely and I've also picked up some great bargains. I hope I can come back next year as Miss England!'

What the Stork?!

Shoppers at Catterick Sunday Market last week looked on in astonishment as a rare stork picked it's way through the bargains and before settling down to perch on a road sign near the market site at Catterick racecourse.

The distinctive looking bird has beautiful white plumage with a black tail section, red beak and legs and is not a native of the UK. No-one on the market really knows what kind of stork the visitor is – John Wright who sells bangles and is an amateur ornithologist thinks it might be an 'African Marbled Stork' but market staff would welcome contact from any of the public who can identify it.

Greville Worthington, Market Operator said 'We are incredibly excited that this rare bird has found it's way to our market. If anyone reading this is knowledgeable about birds then we'd be extremely grateful if they could get in touch on 01748 812127. The 19 year old, half Brazilian beauty will be out and about at Catterick Market, chatting to shoppers and sitting on her specially made throne. If you're really nice to her (get her a coffee or a lovely crepe or kebab) she might let you have your picture taken with her!

Catterick Sunday Market is a really popular venue for Dads to take their kids on a Sunday - particularly with all the Dads at nearby Catterick Garrison and so Greville Worthington, the outdoor market curator, decided it was time to do something special for them.

I don't think they'll be disappointed, do you?!

Shoppers got the fright of their lives down Catterick Sunday Market a couple of weeks ago when it turned out that the white statue they were looking at was alive!

Adults and children alike jumped a mile when the statue suddenly moved and spoke!

Robin Ellwood has been performing living statues and other characters for years but was amazed by the enthusiasm of the visitors to Catterick Sunday Market. Market organisers were also delighted and lots of different acts are being scheduled for the summer months.

In memory of ...

Catterick Sunday Market together with the Teenage Cancer Trust are planting ten trees to be named after inspirational teenagers who have been treated for cancer on the Teenage Cancer Ward at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Each tree will be planted in honour of some special teenagers as chosen by the nurses on the ward. A message with their name on will be attached to the tree which will last forever.

The first tree has already been allocated to 15 year old Jordan Thompson, an inspirational boy who tragically lost his battle with cancer in September 2007.

These teenagers are truly amazing, having to endure this dreadful disease and the equally horrible treatments as well as the normal emotional upheaval of adolescence. Still, they remain full of energy, hope and love for life and are an inspiration to us all.

After a short drive south from Darlington we arrived at Catterick Sunday Market. Pass Scotch Corner, and be careful not to miss the turn off – we nearly did as I was overtaking at the time.

Over the crossroads where if you turn right you can get to Brompton on Swale. That’s the second village in North Yorkshire with the name Brompton. The second I know anyway, but I’m no geography expert and North Yorkshire is a pretty big place so I might be a liar, but what the hey, I’ve lied before.

So anyway, we cross over the bridge and turn right to get to the market.

I should have worn a hat, it’s a bit cold. You don’ t get that at the Cornmill Centre – it’s all climate controlled and impersonal. Bright and irritating too with its strip lights and chart “classics” intermingling with the chatter of the shoppers.

I should have had breakfast too, that’s my first thought as I pass the crepe stall. Forgotten the name, but it’s some joke on the word crepe. Crepe… crepe… crepe… It’s come to me – Load o’ Crepe. Biscuit and Nutella crepe for breakfast. I prefer the word pancake, but how would you make an amusing stall name? Not sure yet. I’ll think about it.

So as I said I should have brought a hat. My head’s getting cold, but then I don’t have hair, but that’s not out of choice – you start going bald you don’t go for a comb over, you cut it off.

Fruit and veg on the left, “Two bunches of bananas for a pound” the guy shouts,

and then again, with a slight variation “Get your bananas here; two bunches for a pound” and again, then again. I’m so tempted to ask how much the bananas are.

I do that to the kids:

“We got this gun and all these sweets from the pound shop”

“Really? How much was the gun?”

“A pound”

“Oh, and what about the sweets?”

“A pound”

I never tire of it, the more irritating it becomes the funnier it is. You’ve got to take your chances where you can as a parent. You can go too far with that though. I knew someone who taught his kid that a helicopter was called a cow, and vice versa. That’s just crossing a line.

So there I am stuffing chocolate and biscuit pancake into my face, very careful not to spill it - you know what Nutella looks like smeared on your clothes.

“So how much are your bananas?” and then merge with the crowd.

You know there’s a gypsy on the market who reads your fortune. I’m not a believer, but I did poke my face into her Romany caravan to see her puppies (I’m talking about baby dogs) They’re tiny little things, you could fit them in your mouth. I bet she wouldn’t predict that.

“Pancake Intake?”

Further down the market I buy a hat. Oh yes, it’s so much better. I can’t remember the stall name, but it was cheap. In fact it was free as my wife bought it. Something like £1.50. Cheap as chips – actually a little bit cheaper than some chip shops.

“Pancake Keepsake?”

Plastic boxes. You know there are times I’m at home, tidying up or something, and I think how useful it would be to have a plastic box for something. And that’s my problem.

I forget.

I see all the plastic boxes stacked there, and it’s like Aladdin’s cave and I get blinded by the array of sizes and colours and forget what I might want a box for. Was it tools? Hats? Mouth sized dogs? Nah, you can just carry them about in your mouth.

“Pancake Earthquake” – I’m on fire now!

At the end of the market there’s a big tool stall.

Maybe I should clarify something here before I continue – I love my horror films and there is one called “The Toolbox Murders”

So I go around the stall imagining which one would make the best murder weapon, but then end up staring at the braces. Colours again.

“Pancake Handbrake”

I finish off with another pancake/crepe. The Italian salad – mozzarella, pesto and tomato and then return to Darlington.

It’s better than a car boot sale. What else are you going to do on a Sunday? Sleep in with a hangover.

Breathing in the carbon dioxide and breathing out lovely fresh oxygen.

Offsetting our carbon footprints and saving the environment.

You just can't beat trees and that's why Catterick Sunday Market have taken it upon themselves to plant a forest of 8,000 trees on behalf of their shoppers.

That's one tree for every shopper before 11am on a certain Sunday two years ago. Now you don't get a tree planted for you when you pop down Tesco's now do you? !

According to my mother I’d been to Catterick market.

But my confused expression made her re think this.
I’ve never been to the market before. And I didn’t know what to expect.

I had the idea that it would be pretty much like a car boot sale; the odd family selling off the family knick-knacks and most precious spanners.

But no, the market was full of pretty decent stuff, things that you can really use (we all need magic pens and crisps right?)
The atmosphere around the market was fantastic,It took us about an hour to get round and we had a chat to a few of the store holders who were cool.
Unfortunately though, my clumsiness was at its height: I made a man drop his coffee and stepped on several dogs.
And when I got my fortune told I banged my head on the trailer.
Overall I was impressed & I really enjoyed going.
The only thing that slightly let the day down was the freak blizzard and hailstorm but what the hey, it didn't last long!
And there are plenty of hats, hoodies and brollies to be bought if you really don't like to get wet!
Catterick Sunday Market was most definitely not what I expected.
At first I thought it was going to be a car boot sale.
But it’s all brand new, and everyone’s really friendly.
It’s a really good day out.

Catterick Sunday market is really a great place to meet people. I have just moved into the area and found myself pretty lonely. I had heard about Catterick Sunday market and not having much else to do on Sunday, decided to give it a go.

The weather was not great, a bit windy and wintery, but when I arrived there the place was already packed and a real atmosphere going on. It was kind of like being at the seaside, with loads of general banter and just some much different to the usual Sunday morning QUIET. I always felt that everybody disappeared on Sundays when I was growing up and I did not know where they had gone. Either people just chill out and stay put on Sundays (depending on what sort of Saturday they had!!), or they are all to be found at the Catterick Sunday Market!

Anyway I was delighted just to see so many interesting people! From all nationalities. There was even some Nepalese traders selling ethnic stuff (along with the more usual Geordie Fruit and Veg traders with their more ‘Fruity’ language)The main thing for me was that they were all so welcoming and friendly, whether I wanted to buy something or not. It’s actually a pretty cool place to just hang out and let the morning drift along.

There are some really tasty looking food and the smells take me back to some childhood memories. In the end I bought some essentials (bin liners, soap, cleaning stuff), some delicious chocolates (really cheap!), and quite fancied a bicycle at £65 brand new! There was also loads of good looking people I wanted to be friends with. Now How do I make some friends? Any Ideas??

Those of us who are regularly down at the market on a Sunday know what an amazing place it is and what a fantastic bunch of people the traders are - not to mention the visitors who come every week to hang out and check out the bargains.

We wanted to create a blog for everyone to write about their experiences of the market so if you've been to the market then feel free to write a few words and email them to cattericksundaymarket@gmail.com.

Also we'd love to bring videos of the market to the world via our youtube site. There are going to be plenty of prizes for the best blogs - craziest videos etc. so make them wacky and wild and get them in to cattericksundaymarket@gmail.com. All contributions welcome from visitors and traders.

There are some amazing things planned for the Sunday Market soon - things to surprise and amaze you so keep on coming - you never know what's going to happen down at the market!
